YAYOI KUSAMA

YAYOI KUSAMA is an avant-garde artist from Japan, born in 1929. She has experienced hallucinations since she was young. That experience has been influencing as a inspiration of her visualisation. In 1957, she moved to New York and started presenting a variety of stimulating installation artworks. "Happening", a style of performance art which requires a specific time and location to present itself, is regarded as one of her representative art style.

I refer to Dots Obsession and Dots Infinity presented by her in this project. As I explained in my journal, I felt something common between her works and what I want to show. I think it is really useful for my portrait to mention her works below, because their visual effect is well supported by the context. I think, basically, portrait should be telling his/her mental context.

ALIX MAIRE

(Unknown, Alix Marie, unknown)

This photo gives me a specific idea to use the surrounding for my portrait. On the contrary of Self Portrait presented by Sarah, it strengthen the visual impact by bidding personality or self identity. The entire space might help to tell us what she is meant to reveal. The visualisation is quite abstract, but that stimulates my curiosity a lot. I was very inspired by her effective use of space and absence of clear statement.

His Spring lineup was a very much amplified, filled-in, decorated, and dazzling accessorized extension of the girly, geeky, vintage-like

(VOGUE, Sarah Mower, 23/Sep/2015 Milano collection)

In this project, I am very struggling to transform something privileged by history into something up-to-date. Or maybe combine them together. This collection emphasise the old sense and enhances the "too much" aesthetic, which is mentioned with the words "decorated" "geeky" and "vintage", by refining. I think the collection is helpful to control expectable mess on the outfits design.

This collection is really unique and interesting. What is fascinating is that they are really sophisticated within the combination of symmetry and asymmetry, although the shapes would be regarded as "Crazy". Their unique designs are well balanced by the other element of design, fabric and colour choice. Especially, I really appreciate that the designer used only monochrome, because it also helps the garments to be elegant. In conclusion, I think the balance of uniqueness and sophistication is the key point of this collection.

FREI OTTO (Handmade)

Screen Shot 2018-07-03 at 10.46.36.png

(Japan Pavilion Expo 2000, Frei Otto, 2000)

This pavilion is aesthetically fascinating me very much. Both classic and modern material for architecture is creating the beautiful combination. And also the key elements are geometric forms, which I feel fascination by nature. It is really close atmosphere to what I want to visualise in the future as a designer.

NAUM GABO (Handmade)

Screen Shot 2018-07-02 at 13.45.42.png

Naum Gabo was a Russian sculptor. His works often combined geometric forms and organic forms. They usually look light and empty because he attempted to present the value of negative spaces. The style is possibly regard as constructivism and/or futurism. But I personally feel that none of them is describing his work well. It is visually more close to human structure like born; Anatomy.

The first secret of great designs (Pecha Kucha)

The first secret of greatest designs (Pecha Kucha)

His presentation is great, because the message is well explained and easy to understand. He lead our curiosity. In my analysis, it follows this rule.

 C20F20A8-E907-4BAE-9B0E-8FDAFA9F6C50.jpeg

The other effective techniques are

1 Repeating a key word

2 Start with conclusion and end with conclusion in each section

3 Timely use of graphic screen to describe specific action or effect.

[Summary, My interpretation]

To design something make the world better, the designer is required to look at the status qua broader and closer, and think younger. What he meant by “Look broader” is that, stepping back and seeing the whole scape of the issue itself, you would be able to find out the point that you have to design something for. “Look closer” means that the key point that can possibly change the whole thing is often hidden behind a tiny little detail. Sometimes it is a too tiny question for us to even notice. “Think younger” is that you are able to figure out the nature and the essence when the first site. And as you “habituate” it, it is going to fade away from your mind. There is no longer a chance to change the world after you habituate it.

 [my opinion]

His statement is really making a sense. I think “Designing” starts with “realizing”. As I mention in my PECHA KUCHA, I believe that designs should be suggestions to people for their better lives. It could be phisical convenience and it could be mental pleasure. But no matter what it is, the designer who achieve that is a person who realized a tiny thing which is potentially changed and changed it into what they believe is better. Realizing all contain looking broader and thinking younger, because otherwise the designer doesn’t realize the thing, first of all.

ANNA BARRIBALL (Drawing)

Screen Shot 2018-07-08 at 13.51.58.png

(Blind, Anna Barriball, 2016)

What I like about the painting the most is that it is just a painting. I mean that I appreciate the simple idea to paint on a piece of white paper to present a blind.  Although it is a painting, but the gaps and shadow look real. I tried to mix many different types of drawing medium on paper, however, I feel aesthetically attraction to that kind of simplicity. It is not only simple use of materials, but also a simple strong idea like this.

Charlotte Olympia launches fashion accessories designed in collaboration with Zaha Hadid

Fashion brand Charlotte Olympia has launched a pair of high-heeled shoes and a clutch bag, which were designed in collaboration with the late architect Zaha Hadid.Made from perspex with rose gold accents, the platform heel shoes and transparent clutch bag both feature fluid shapes that reference Hadid's signature sculptural style

(DEZEEN Magazine, India Block, 18/11/2017)

It is a good example of transforming own style in a different way. They successfully applied iconic style of Zaha Hadid into fashion accessories. I think the key ideology is scale changing and dimension changing when I transform my design style belonging to Fashion design, like they did with these accessories.

HELENA ALMEIDA

HELENA ALMEIDA is a Portuguese multi-medium artist. She often use the combination of photography and paintings.

I inspired simply by her portrait interns of the visual presentation. Thanks to that, I got a idea to add layers on the first photo of myself, corresponding to my theme.

SARAH LUCAS

Screen Shot 2018-07-02 at 14.55.41.png

(Self portrait, Sarah Lucas, 1996)

Although this is a simple photo of an artist herself, it has a strong impact. What I appreciate about this portrait is that the context is perfectly projected on it, which is that she tried to show her masculinity with this. I think she was confident to reveal her "real" by designing the portrait in a simple way. I feel fascinated by this one more than her other portraits, because of that.

Colourful and complex patterns like an collage on the outfits. That is one of the ideas for the project. It gives me two idea how I can use "Rose" as a detail of the garment, printing or silhouettes. But I wonder why it does not look busy or too much, because it often become so when I use many colours. Moreover it is also playing with shapes at the same time, which is likely to be messy. This collection is inspiring for me because of its elegant use of colourful patterns and shapes.

Askari (Handmade, historical reference)

Askari is the word describing the soldiers that belonged to empires from late 19 century to late 20 century. When it comes to British army, the Askari soldiers were gathered from Sudan and Somalis. They initially did not have a official uniform or a battle suit, but a usual clothes or a tribal uniform. However since 1895, they were given a official uniform and joined the troop called King's African Rifles, KAR.

The inspiration is unique here. It is not players or movements, but the trace of the ball which is invisible. Although the technique of handiwork is simple, the idea and the focus is really appealing. It fascinates audience by the idea, not by how much it looks cool.

They are beautiful. It looks looks massive but does not look "heavy". The transparency filter the light and that feels as if it is a levitation stone which is a fictitious stone to levitate anything with quantity. The technique is also very sophisticated and I think it has the biggest impact during the degree show. If I were the designer, I would try to put colour liquid moving or looking so inside the jewellery.

Start with WHY (Pecha Kucha)

Start with WHY (Pecha Kucha)

It is really persuasive. He presented his statement with data which was brought from his unique perspective and that makes this presentation strong. Challenging the typical thought and introduce exactly different way, he explained with specific examples. It is a common technique with the first one, The first secret of great designs.

Analyzing them, I think it is better to mention specifically when I want to persuade audience. I am planning to use a map or explain my idea of future business in PECHA KUCHA. But the concern is wether or not it suits for that, because PECHA KUCHA is supposed to be presented mainly with graphic images, so I’m wondering if audience feel uncomfortable with written maps.

SUN XUN (Drawing)

Screen Shot 2018-07-08 at 14.10.46.png

(The Time Vivarium 108, Sun Xun, 2015)

This painting is interesting because he used newspaper as a big canvas. Some newspaper that we can see clearly indicate how much big scale of panting it is. The scale would be big enough to take over the audience in a gallery or studio. In addition to that, his dynamic blur painting, abstraction, is also matching to the scale. I only do not understand what he meant by the title, The Time Vivarium. This http://www.skny.com/artists/sun-xun?view=slider#7

KAORU ARIMA (Drawing)

Screen Shot 2018-07-07 at 19.51.24.png

(Face of a human, Kaoru Arima, 2015)

the new paintings reflect Arima's concern with a structure determined by play with color and painterly touch. As in multiple and varied historical points of reference in painting such as Rembrandt's -black-, Picasso's -Cubism-. Warhol's -layering-, Arima's practice, in general, is a process in which new developments may seem accidental and in-flux, yet this is his intent - to generate a sense of time and play.

( from the website MISAKO & ROSEN; https://www.misakoandrosen.jp/en/exhibitions/15/03/)

Although this series of works are inspired by historical or historically important styles a lot, it feels like it belongs to none of them. I think it is because the identity of the human is totally different. I mean that the person is living in a modern life and thus this painting at least has a different atmosphere which must not have existed a century ago. Rather than the technics to combine those reference, I was inspired by the motif which does not look really match to them.
